Welcome to Java Netrek!

What is Netrek?

Netrek is a 16-player graphical real-time battle simulation with a Star Trek theme. The game is divided into two teams of 8 (or less), who dogfight each other and attempt to conquer each other's planets.

The most attractive feature of Netrek is that it is played against real human opponents over the Internet. As a consequence it requires not only quick reflexes, but also fast thinking and a strong sense of teamwork.

If you are unfamiliar with the game of Netrek, be sure to check out the The Netrek Home Page.

What is Java?

Java is a programming language recently developed by Sun Microsystems. Java is designed to create executable content for the World Wide Web. If you have the Netscape Navigator 2.0 browser, for example, you will be able to download and run Java applets embedded into web pages. For more information about the language look at the Java Home Page.

Java applets can perform a wide range of actions, from displaying animation, to connecting with databases or establishing communication channels between users. You can find a lot of excellent Java applets at the Gamelan applet repository.

What is Java Netrek?

Java Netrek is a set of Java based tools which allow you to watch recorded Netrek games on the Web. The core of the package is the Netrek Viewer applet which can replay a Netrek recording when embedded into a Web page. Also available is a command line application that can extract and save parts of Netrek recordings, and a Netrek Editor that can both view recordings and extract parts from them.
