After travelling 16 hours by train from Gothenburg to Ume=E5 I'm back home; with time to ponder about the NASG'99 that has just gone by. It was a great NASG. It's impossible to compare NASG's since they are all so different, so I can't rate it, but I must say that I really enjoyed it and I feel sorry for everyone who wasn't able to make it. I got there Tuesday morning. I had mailed the dtek twinks and Jon saying what time I would arrive, hoping that they would meet up with me. In my hurry to get to the train (I almost missed it (hehe)) I had left the note where I had written down Jon's and Mats' address and phone numbers behind so when no one showed up to meet me at the train station I didn't really know what to do. I had a vague recollection of Jon's address, so I got a free map from the tourist information and from there it took about 20 minutes to orientate myself to where he lives. When I got to Jon's place Lundell (Knulla) and Fredrik (Potemkin) were already there. They were all very surprised to see me, and as they looked at me they laughed and said that it wouldn't have mattered if they had met me at the train station or not since they wouldn't have been able to recognize me (from the face file photo) anyways. Later in the evening we picked up Sven Wallman (Luxor) who didn't really feel up to a NASG and went home the next day to fix some things with his new appartment. After picking up Sven we met up with Jonke (Beck's Bier) for beer and funny conversations. After a while came Uppling (Aldebaran) and after yet another while came a whole bunch of people. We drank a lot of beer and some people event wasted beer money on mini golf. When we didn't have a lot of money left (I know I didn't) we went up to dtek to play some trek. I noticed that the SUN:s at dtek are totally worthless and impossible to play from, so I utterly sucked, so I just played some stupid roles while dreaming about my own rewly terminal with 14" screen and a broken two button mouse. The next day came basically everyone else. It was great to meet some trekkers that I hadn't met before. Craig is a cool guy and so are Pregler and Otmar. The dtek twinks are, well... dtek twinks. :) We went to the beach on Wednesday and I got really sun-burned (hey, I live over the polar circle--I'm whiter than Snow White!). Craig told me he (happyfish) has a theme song (which I've forgotten now), so we came up with some other theme songs for other netrek players. Pieter (Rik Meleet) thought a suitable song for me (StarDuck) would be the bird song (you know the one that goes "Have you heard, about the bird, well everybody knows that the bird is a word" or something like that). I thought a suitable song for Fraser Stewart (Nemesis) would be "Dude looks like a lady" (by Aerosmith) (see old NASG pictures (look for a man in a dress) if you don't get that one) and a perfect theme song for Dirk Vleugels (slot scum) is "Sometimes I run" by Britney Spears (you know the one that goes "Sometimes I run, sometimes I hide, sometimes I'm scared of you..."). Every day we drank beer and played trek, just as was promised. I didn't get to taste Kurt's schapps this year even though he did bring it this year too, but that's okay cause I got to drink of Lundell's vodka (and I hear Craig's Canadian whiskey was really good, even though I had to turn it down). What made it a NASG to remember was all the cool people. I'll make a list of everyone, and I hope I won't forget anyone. Jon (Sprawl); A really cool guy who let me stay at his place and who every morning gave everyone living there a great breakfast. He took lots of pictures that hopefully will be scanned some day. Erik (Knulla); Almost beat me at Trivial Pursuit--twice! :) Listens to Black Metal and when I said "I was thinking about bringing some Slayer to make Erik happy" scoffed at me and said "I stopped listening to them three years ago". :) He fooled Rikard into taking a great gulp of vodka by saying it was lemonade (hehee). Fredrik (Potemkin); Thinks it was embarrasing when people at Heathrow airport wanted to carry his bags thinking he was a real English lord. Beat me 1/2 at Trivial Pursuit. Pieter (Rik Meleet); Talks, talks, talks and then talks a bit more. Has a weird dutch accent which is hard to understand when he's drunk, but he's still a great guy. He hurt his foot real bad (probably got some fracture in the heel) when jumping on cliffs when we were at the beach. He limped most of NASG'99. Mats (Grimjack); The great organizer. He had the most people staying at his place and I think he lost more sleep than anyone else just worrying about the NASG and trying to please everyone. The perfect NASG organizer! Rikard (Zarik); Giggles like crazy when drunk. Likes to swim 10 km's every day (gah!). Doesn't really buttorp that much once you get to know him. ;) Did an amazing thing in a NASG vs World game where he, after having taken CAP who was guarded by the enemy base, uncloaked, killed the base, and then flew back to pick more. Mikael (sand man); Cool guy with comments that bite. Drives a great car with 300 horse powers! Whooped Rikard's ass in a game of Go. Has a pulse that never exceeds 70 when playing trek; I saw him flying his BB on top of a friendly panicking base who was screaming out loud banging his keyboard and he just said "don't worry--I'll det those". :) Jonke (Beck's Bier); People aren't kidding when they say "more beer!" is Jonke's favourite thing to say. A partying guy who will always make you laugh. Check out his picture on splunty's homepage . Search for "white trash junkie". :) Jan (KIA); Seems to love to drink beer and play trek. Always has some funny ideas of how you can change your strategy in a game. Cheated by sleeping at his girlfriend's place instead of staying with us sweaty ugly trekkers. Andreas (Aldebaran); Stayed at a friend's place. Woke up late and missed most of the stuff we did before we started drinking beer. When trekking, forward is the only direction he knows. Craig (happyfish); The great fish! Thinks we should have next year's NASG at Victoria, Canada (home of the uvic twinks)--he says liqour is really cheap there. Otmar (Telcontar); Gave me a very weird look from top to toe when I introduced myself as "Niclas - StarDuck"; I couldn't help but laugh out loud. Got about a million dooshes in the clue games we played. Kurt (007); Showed me a lot of new awesome features in the COW client (great new hockey graphics, awesome bronco graphics, cool sound, naked chicks on the galactic, etc). Whenever someone said "wouldn't it be cool to have a client that " he would reply "that is no problem to do". Doesn't really want to take a bath unless it's 28 degrees or above in the water but he did go for a swim in the ocean (18 degrees). Peter (ooops); Probably the shortest guy at this year's NASG. Always had a big grinning smile on his face, and was eager to both drink beer and play trek (my kind of NASG friend! :). Sven (Luxor); Was a bit down due to some personal problems. Was content on meeting everyone just once and then get back home. Sven (Courier); That tall german guy. He looked exactly the same as when I met him in Amseterdam. He got a new job as a game coder and wants me to beta-test some game they are currently working on (just drop me a line Sven!). He gave me more beers than I can remember, and they were all good. I taught him some new good-to-know phrases in German ("Pass Auf! Ich spritze!") that I learned watching German porn in the military. Stefan (Paddan Fain); Shorter and skinnier than most people. Was only with us for one day worth of trek and beer. According to d4sand he said he tools me in a dogfight. :) Fredrik (Mauler); Has started to study economics thinking "no one can fail at economics". Otmar agreed, and wished him the best of luck. Shouts out orders in the lab like you have never heard. :) A funny guy that provided us with lots of beer Friday. I hope I didn't forget anyone. I'd like to thank Mats and Jon for making this year's NASG a great one. Thanks also to Rikard and Mikael for additional organizing. See you guys next year! Regards, Niclas
