Clue Ranking

Introduction I was relaxing the other day yet thinking about netrek, and about all the terms I use to describe people. I had started with a single list, sort of like the ``great chain of being'' for netrek descriptions that went like:
rewlers > clue > soaks > beer
But found that people never fit one slot or another perfectly (Obviously). When I rewrote it, I came across an idea: That if you now know someone who is free beer for example, they will someday advance to psycho-ogger then from there to ogger, then from there to robo-ogger :> The idea being that some people, based on what you describe them now, will eventually become really good at a sub-skill and stick with it for 2 years until they're good. Watch for mday to become an ogger. Watch for P. Treides to become a ruthless planetskum. Watch for dkong to become a flattener. It will happen.

So! Check out these common nicknames and ability levels in various skills:

Cluefulness ! l = gimp
a gimp tries one thing then another: picks up armies and dies. Stops trying to take, tries to ogg, dies. Runs to bomb, gets scummed for acc. Stands to control space, gets run over. They dont learn, they try and fail at everything. They have no focus and you wonder why they dont just specialize.

l-- = soak
Soaks run up, suck down a stream of torps for you and just happen to leave that planet clear enough for you to take. They werent escorting, just that they soaked up bullets and the planet defender fled, leaving an easy take for you. Teams need soaks.

l = clue
They seem to do a lot of things right. You watch them, they do stuff like kill a guy, get lucky, bomb that nearby planet, then die. They switch to sc and bomb if no one is bombing. They are the only one with a kill they start to carry. They suggest planets to take.

l++ = rewler
Just like clue, only they die less. They are hard to kill but not impossible, because they try to bomb the planet and dogfight at the same time, yet, they succeed then ogg a guy sucessfully. eek.

Buddying up (Playing Together Selfishly) Yes its a skill I dont want to go into though, since I never liked the style.

!y = dumb buddy
He dies on you. Over and over. He pops plasma over you, it gets phasered. That hurt. He tractors when you pressor. You die just cause you are near him. He sucks.

y-- = rinkum and dinkum
Rinkum and Dinkum fly scouts. Scouts are not the ship of buddy. Yet they kill a lot, only, why fly sc? Usually Rinkum dies and Dinkum skums it.

y = buddy
You know them, they pop plasma. ``SMACK! SMACK! Lick it bitch!'' Surprisingly easy to kill. These dont get ratios over 2.5 nor defenses over 2.5. Although what they are doing isn't ``clueful'' since they are just using a slot, they tend to tie up another player, so all's even and hey, they have fun.

y++ = bb so big/superior bb buddy
Two bb buddies, walk down the side, SMACKing all, taking at will. No one can stop them. (el0g alone is like b+++) Maybe they just hover near base and rack up 100 kills. Fuck you, it amuses them. :>

Helpfulness !h = ensign clueless
Ok he is clueless, but somehow(!) he knows how to message, yet, his ratio is .2 He manages to be where he needs to be (roughly) yet he goes down in flames every time. Sigh. Oh well, he'll get better.

h-- = evil messager
This one yells at his team and gives orders (remember he reads!! now he writes too! :P) Eventually you have to tell him to stuff his trash because: he's annoying

h = escort
He reads, he finds you, he escorts you. You get good takes, you still die a lot, but you are getting some good takes for a change, and you look forward to having him around.

h++ = wingman
He watches you and helps *only you* get kills, carry, escorts ya, bombs what needs bombing, clears, gets you out alive, even if he dies. He is a fucking saint.

Space Control

!c = beer
He just gets run over. He fucking sits there and gets hit. You actually are stunned he died so easy. Was he wounded? No. He just cant aim. Phaser, what is that?

c-- = twink
He could move to defend armies. He could move to escort. He could move to defend base. He always misses them cloakers. He *always* shoots at the uncloaked. He ``Watches the Birdy'' and is so easy to clear.

c = dogfighter
You know he's hard to kill, got the pressor, got the tractor, flies CA or BB, and slowly crushes.

c++ = hero
Why dont they die? They must die. He didnt die. He is at warp 8 at least after the fight. Can't be buttorped, the proverbial ``irresistable force''.

Bombing !b = acc generator
Sees an enemy planet with armies on it. Flies straight to it, dies, the enemy immediately picks up the armies off this easy kill. Essentially, the whole team would be better off without this guy.

b-- = pesky scout / never bombs
Runs around, kind of bombs, not greatly sucessful. Dies a little too much, but does get a lot of bombing in. But ... doesnt bomb enough really. Alternately, they never bomb. Why? Who fucking knowS!?!?

b = bomber
Gets things flat enough that enemy carriers have a hard time getting armies. Slows down the take pace.

b++ = flattener
Gets them flat, keeps them flat. Maybe even dies a lot. Who cares? They have no fucking armies now anyway. Calls the pickups, oggs if there's nothing to bomb. Feisty little dogfighter too (of a kind)

Ogging !o = free beer
This is different from just beer, since these guys run straight at you instead of wait for you to come to them, + they run straight up them buttorps in a light ship. You wince just killing them.

o-- = psycho-ogger / never-ogger
These guys ogg over and over, pathetically. Sometimes they get you. Ow. Kinda unexpected. But seriously, what's their point? They are psycho and they're hurting their team. Oh well, life :> Alternately, they never never fucking ogg.

o = ogger
Actually is worthwhile at this ogging stuff. Seriously, if you had to choose what they are doing, send them out ogging.

o++ = doosh machine
Doosh! Doosh! They clear space, they crush carriers. Slide under the escort and DOOSH! that bad boy. Seriously, over and over.

Taking !t = army hotel
They get a kill, load up, run forward, and die. Shit, you think, shit why not just leave it as bait for the enemy scout??

t-- = army thief/runner
They purposely run around running and carrying lots, hoping to retake their core. Fucking losers, here is your medal:

t = taker
Die taker skum. Die.

t++ = ruthless taker
OhMyGodIDidNotSeeACloaker OhMyGod They take take take. Help.

Defender !d = obstacle
They get in front of the planet then die. They transwarp to base during the ogg wave and die on base.

d--
They die so easy, they actually help the planet they were defending get taken. Damn. At least they see cloakers?

d = defender
You approach with armies. They dont run at you. They sit and sit. They wont leave, they wont ogg. They seem to have plenty of fuel and they wait and wait. You get impatient and go somewhere else.

d++ = soldering iron of justice
Dont laugh at the soldering iron of justice. He holds it all against 2 clearers/escort and then dooshes the take attempt.

Rating Ok!!! Now rate yourself based on how you *usually* play. Me myself, I rate myself as:

Well, at least I am honest :(

I know that I generally get that bombing in after fighting (c) but only if I win (d-- :<). I run around a lot bombing the shit outta the enemy (b++) but I am usually so hurt that when i try to ogg i suck them buttorps and die sadly (o--). I bop about taking planets, but not much of a planet defender. In fact if I come into an LPS game I might not make a lot of difference since I dont buddy well (b--)

Ok, NEXT what I should do is rate the relative values of each stat to get:
